Many moons ago this question would not be so popular. It used to be incredibly difficult to recycle artificial grass due to the complexity of the procedure. So, can artificial grass be recycled? The answer is yes, with new technology artificial grasses can in fact be recycled.
Although most artificial grass is made mainly of plastic materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, latex and polyurethane, which can be recycled, it also contains infill which is usually made from sand, proving difficult to recycle without modern technology.
However, new equipment and technology can successfully remove the sand and rubber from the turf. This ends up becoming a plastic carpet which can then be put through the recycling process as it is. Finally, the processed artificial turf can be recycled or re-purposed into new products. It could be turned into recycled bags and backpacks, plastic dog bowls or even as a topdressing layer on natural grass. It could be reused as a ground cover in parks, golf courses and animal shelters.
To answer your question, yes artificial grass can now be recycled. However, only a limited number of companies offer this service so unfortunately artificial grass is not a very popular recycled material at all.

As snow continues to fall throughout the UK, many are asking how best they can maintain their artificial grass lawns through these frosty conditions. Whilst artificial grass is very resilient and should hold up well to below freezing temperatures, there are some precautionary measures you can consider to ensure the longevity of your artificial grass.

If possible do not allow the snow to build up on top of your artificial grass, especially if you have to walk across it frequently. This can cause the snow to become compacted, trapping the grass fibres in blocks of ice which can be dangerous to walk on and may cause the grass fibres to break. It’s best to gently remove the snow build up by hand or with a non-metal shovel.

Your grass may flatten under the weight of heavy snow fall, this should bounce back on its own once the snow melts away but you can always give it a helping hand by brushing through the grass with a stiff bristled brush.

Artificial grass won’t be damaged by the usual wintry conditions – unlike real grass, which can die off in extreme conditions. However, the plastic blades of the grass will stiffen if frost hits. This makes it not as pleasant for people or pets to walk on.

Is it possible to completely protect your artificial lawn from snow? The best way to stop your artificial lawn from being exposed to snowy conditions is to cover it with a waterproof tarpaulin until the snow has stopped. Using salt-grit to melt the snow is NOT recommended as this cause blockages in the holes of the grass’s backing which will prevent it from being able to drain the water away efficiently when the snow melts.

Ultimately, all fake grass should be fine to stand up against the elements. However, it may realistically depend on the quality of the artificial grass and the climate it’s designed to withstand. Always check this with your chosen installer.
